The Full Moon Reset: How to Cleanse and Recharge Your Crystals Safely
Once a month the moon is full, and once a month a great many women take their jewellery off the dressing table, put it somewhere it can be seen by the sky, and start again.
You can treat that as energy work or you can treat it as a monthly habit that gets your jewellery cleaned, checked and thought about. Both readings lead to the same useful ritual, so we will give you the version that also protects your pieces.
Why a monthly reset is worth doing at all
Jewellery accumulates. Hand cream, hairspray, sunscreen, the dust of an ordinary month. Settings loosen. Chains develop a kink you have stopped noticing. And the pieces you love slowly slide to the bottom of the dish underneath the ones you do not.
A monthly reset fixes all of that. The full moon is simply a reminder with a date attached, which is precisely why the tradition has lasted.
The ten minute ritual
- Lay everything out. All of it, on a cloth, in the light. You will be surprised what you have not worn.
- Clean each piece properly. Warm water, a drop of mild soap, a soft cloth. Dry completely before it goes anywhere.
- Check the settings. Press gently on each stone with a fingertip. Any movement at all means it needs a jeweller before you wear it again.
- Choose your three for the month. The ones you will actually wear. Put them where you can reach them and the rest away.
- Set them out overnight. A windowsill inside, on a cloth, where moonlight reaches. Bring them in with the morning.
If you like a little ceremony with it, hold each piece for a moment as you set it down and name what you would like the coming month to hold. Not a wish list. One word is plenty.
The care rules that actually matter
This is the part that most crystal guides get dangerously wrong, so read this before you follow anything you saw online.
Never use water on these
Selenite dissolves. Malachite, pyrite, hematite, turquoise and lapis lazuli all react badly to prolonged water. Anything porous or fibrous should stay dry.
Never use salt on jewellery
Salt water is the most commonly recommended cleansing method and it is the worst one for anything set in metal. It corrodes silver, works into settings and pits soft stones. If you own a loose tumbled stone, that is your business. Do not do it to a ring.
Keep these out of the sun
Amethyst, rose quartz, citrine and opal all fade or dry in direct sunlight. Moonlight is fine. A hot windowsill at two in the afternoon is not, which is another reason the full moon version of this ritual is the sensible one.
Moonstone specifically
Moonstone is around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale with good cleavage, meaning a sharp knock can split it. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth only. Never an ultrasonic cleaner, never steam, and store it separately so harder stones do not scratch it.
If you cannot see the moon
Cloud makes no difference to the ritual, and neither does a night indoors. Set your pieces on a windowsill anyway. Nobody has ever needed a clear sky to take ten minutes for themselves.
Full moons and when to do it
A full moon comes around every 29 and a half days, so it lands on a different date each month. Any decent almanac or weather app will tell you the date for your part of Australia or New Zealand, and if you miss it by a night or two, the ritual works exactly as well.
The date is a reminder, not a rule.
Starting the month with something new
If your reset leaves you feeling that one piece is missing, moonstone is the natural choice for a full moon, for reasons that hardly need explaining. The Moonstone Earrings Loveliness Hoops are an easy everyday piece, and the Moonstone Necklace Skin-Touch sits close enough to the skin to be worn under anything.
Or browse by the feeling you want the month to have, in Intuition, Transformation or Inner Peace.
