Moonstone, Amethyst or Labradorite: Which Calming Stone Suits You?

Most guides to choosing a gemstone ask you what your birth month is, or what your star sign is, and then hand you a stone whether it suits you or not.

We would rather ask a more useful question: what does your tiredness actually feel like? Because "I am worn out" covers at least three completely different experiences, and each one points to a different stone.

Read these three and see which one stings

A. "I cannot switch off at night"

You are physically tired. You want to sleep. But the moment the light goes off, your head starts up: the appointment, the conversation you handled badly in 1998, whether you locked the back door.

Your stone is amethyst.

B. "I sleep, but I never feel rested"

You get your hours. You still wake heavy and slow, and the day never quite gets going. Evenings blur into bedtime with no line between them.

Your stone is moonstone.

C. "There is nothing left of me by Thursday"

You are not sleepless so much as drained. You are the one everybody rings. You give and give and there is nothing coming back the other way.

Your stone is labradorite.

If you chose A: amethyst

Amethyst is purple quartz, and it has been the stone of a clear head since the Greeks. It is the traditional choice for people whose minds run hot, which is a polite way of saying people who lie in the dark solving problems that do not need solving until Tuesday.

How to use it: keep it within reach of the bed. When your head starts up, hold the stone and give the thought somewhere to go. Say it out loud once. Then put it down.

Where to start: the Amethyst Ring Flow for the hand, or the Amethyst Necklace Heroine T-Lock if you prefer something at the throat, which is where a lot of women hold their tension without realising.

Care note: amethyst fades in direct sun. Do not store it on the windowsill.

If you chose B: moonstone

Moonstone glows rather than sparkles, and that difference is the whole point. Sparkle is daytime. Glow is evening. It is the stone for drawing a line between the two.

How to use it: make it the last thing you touch at night. Rings off, moonstone in the palm, ten slow breaths out. Repetition is what turns it into a signal your body actually recognises.

Where to start: the Moonstone Ring Harlow if you want something to turn, or the Moonstone Bracelet Flow if you read in bed and take your rings off first.

If you chose C: labradorite

Grey until it is not. Tilt labradorite and blue and gold move across it like weather. It is the stone associated with protection, which in practice means the stone for people who could do with a few more boundaries.

How to use it: put it on before the demanding part of the day, not after. It is armour, and armour goes on first.

Where to start: the Halo of Calm ring, or the Labradorite and Black Obsidian Toi Et Moi Necklace if you would rather wear it where other people can see it, which is its own kind of statement.

What if you chose all three?

Then start with moonstone, and be a little kind to yourself this month. Choosing all three usually means the problem is the load, not the stone, and no piece of jewellery is going to take an item off your list.

What a stone can do is give you a moment that belongs to you, several times a day, at the exact points where you would otherwise push straight through. Do not underestimate what a few of those add up to over a month.

Wearing more than one

They combine perfectly well. A common set-up: labradorite for the day, moonstone for the evening, amethyst on the bedside table. Different stones for different hours, the way you would change from shoes into slippers.
