Why Moonstone Is the Stone Women Reach For When Sleep Won't Come
There is a particular kind of tiredness that arrives somewhere after fifty. It is not the tiredness of a long day in the garden. It is the tiredness of waking at 2am with your mind switched on, of lying there doing sums about tomorrow, and of getting up at six feeling as though you never really went to bed at all.
If that sounds familiar, you are in very good company. Sleep changes as we age. It gets lighter, it breaks more easily, and it takes longer to come back once it goes. And when sleep goes, everything else follows: energy, patience, mood, the version of yourself you actually like being.
Which brings us to moonstone. Of all the gemstones we sell, it is the one women write to us about most, and almost always for the same reason: they wanted something calming to hold on to at the end of the day.
What moonstone actually is
Moonstone is a feldspar mineral, and its famous glow has a proper name: adularescence. Inside the stone, two types of feldspar are layered in microscopically thin sheets. When light enters, it scatters between those layers and floats back out as that soft blue-white sheen that seems to drift across the surface as you move your hand.
That is the whole trick. No treatment, no coating, no clever setting. Just light moving slowly through stone. It is also why moonstone has been tied to the moon, to night, and to rest in almost every culture that has ever mined it, from India to Sri Lanka to Australia.
Why women reach for it at night
Let us be honest with each other: a gemstone is not a sleeping tablet, and we will never pretend otherwise. What moonstone offers is something quieter and, for a lot of women, more useful in the long run.
It gives you a cue. Sleep researchers talk endlessly about wind-down cues: the small, repeated signals that tell your nervous system the day is finished. A warm shower is a cue. Dimming the lamps is a cue. Putting the phone in another room is a cue.
Slipping off your rings and turning a moonstone over in your palm for two minutes is a cue too. It is tactile, it is slow, it is the same every night, and it does not have a screen on it. Do that for three weeks and your body starts to recognise it.
The stone is not doing the work. The ritual is doing the work, and the stone is what makes you remember to do the ritual.
The three ways women wear moonstone for the evening
1. On a chain, close to the collarbone
A pendant sits where you notice it. When your shoulders are around your ears at nine at night, the small weight of a Moonstone Necklace Heroine against your skin is a reminder to drop them. Choose a chain length that lands above the neckline of your nightdress so it never pulls.
2. On the hand you fidget with
Most of us have one. If yours is the right, put the stone there. A Moonstone Ring Harlow is smooth enough to turn without catching, and turning it is exactly the point. Restless hands want a job. Give them a good one.
3. On the wrist, for the readers
If you read in bed, a bracelet is the piece you will actually keep on. The Moonstone Bracelet Flow moves with your wrist rather than digging into it, which matters when you are propped up on one elbow with a paperback.
A wind-down that takes four minutes
- Turn the big light off. One lamp only, and the warmer the bulb the better.
- Take your rings off, one at a time. Slowly. This is the first signal.
- Hold the moonstone in your palm and breathe out for longer than you breathe in. Four in, six out. Ten rounds.
- Say what tomorrow's first task is, out loud, once. Then put it down with the stone. It has somewhere to live now, so your head does not have to hold it.
- Leave the stone on the bedside table where you will see it when you wake at 3am.
That last step matters more than it sounds. Waking in the night is normal. Panicking about waking in the night is what keeps you awake. Something familiar to reach for in the dark breaks that loop for a lot of women.
Choosing your first piece
Rainbow moonstone has the blue flash. White moonstone is milkier and softer in colour. Neither is better, and both are the real stone, so buy the one you like looking at, because the one you like looking at is the one you will wear.
Size matters more than you think. A large stone looks wonderful in a photograph and gets caught on jumpers all winter. For everyday wear, and especially for sleeping, go smaller and smoother than your instinct says.
Start with the Inner Peace collection if you want the calm pieces gathered in one place, or browse everything in Gemstones and see what your eye goes to first. It is usually right.
